In the first moments of Madre, Elena (Marta Nieto) gets a nightmarish phone call from her little son. The desperate mother is unable to help, and after the call ends, the boy disappears without a trace.

10 years later Elena lives and works on the beach where her son disappeared. There she meets teenage Jean, who reminds her of her son. The budding relationship between them is hard to accept for both Elena’s boyfriend and Jean’s parents.

Madre is in turns tense, heart-breaking and fascinatingly complex, a psychological relationship drama and a thriller, that is told with elegant, skillful long takes. Marta Nieto, awarded for her role at the Venice Film Festival, is captivating in her lead performance as a mother tormented by the past.
