Ben’s village is doomed: An open brown coal pit will swallow it soon. The 11-year old boy and his family have to move to the nearby city of Duren. At the new school, Ben feels left out and bullied. Soon Ben finds some comfort with his new football team, being a decent and enthusiastic player. That is until the other outsider at school, 12-year-old Tariq, a Syrian refugee, shows up at the football pitch. To Ben’s dismay, he turns out to be an excellent player and outshines Ben. Out of jealousy and hurt Ben secretly ill wishes Tariq. Ben flees to his own refuge: the abandoned village. Taking the train, Ben spots Tariq at the local train-station. He doesn’t know where his brother is, still Tariq is desperately waiting for this brother to come and pick him up - a futile but heartbreaking gesture, which Tariq tries to deny. In order to cheer Tariq up, Ben offers to share his biggest secret.
