One of the masters of cinema, Andrey Tarkovsky, has received a worthy treatment in the new documentary, which is an essential watch for fans of his films. The director’s own son Andrey Andreyevich Tarkovsky has lovingly compiled a documentary about his father, which avoids all the talking-head clichés and instead lets father Tarkovsky speak for himself. In rare recordings Tarkovsky recounts his thoughts on art, religion, being a filmmaker in the Soviet Union and, of course, his own films.
In the documentary, images from important places in Tarkovsky’s life are mixed with shots from his films, and his thoughts are conjoined with their dialogue. Together they become something that truly looks and sounds like a Tarkovsky film.
