Films for Children and the Young

Every year Espoo Ciné also presents a special series of films for the younger audiences. With the day-time programme, we wish to provide school classes and daycare groups with the opportunity to attend film screenings. School classes and daycare groups can register for screenings by submitting an online form (in Finnish).

For the youngest film audiences Espoo Ciné offers a mixture of animated shorts. The running time of each screening is about half an hour. This year included in the screening are Siri Melchior's Whisteless (Ei pihaustakaan/Fløjteløs), Nils Skapans' Wonderful Day (Ihana päivä/Burviga diena) and Kaisa Penttilä's The Egg Race (Munaralli).

The animated shorts have no dialogue or subtitles, so they are suitable for even the youngest viewers.

For slightly older cinema-goers Espoo Ciné has designed a special series of films. This year the series for children and the young includes Christian Lo's Rafiki (Bestikset/Bestevenner), a film about two girls set to find their lost friend. Oliver Ussing's My Good Enemy (Paras viholliseni/Min bedste fjende) deals with themes such as bullying and the dynamics of power. Birger Larsen's Super Brother (Superbroidi/Super bror) is a story of two brothers who find an asteroid from outer space, containing secret super powers.

The series also contains Mari Rantasila's awaited sequel for the tale of Risto Räppääjä, Risto Räppääjä ja Polkupyörävaras, as well as Pekka Karjalainen's Vähän Kunnioitusta.

School classes in Espoo are also offered the chance to see the most essential Finnish films of the year from the big screen. This year Espoo Ciné screens Saara Cantell's Heartbeats (Kohtaamisia), Joonas Berghäll and Mika Hotakainen's Steam of Life (Miesten vuoro) and Aleksi Salmenperä's Bad Family (Paha perhe). The series also contains a screening of Mijke de Jong's adoption-themed drama Joy.

The screenings are during the day to better accommodate them into the school programme. However, the screenings are not closed for the general public, either. The tickets for these daytime screenings are also cheaper than the normal festival tickets.
