Family Ties

Family is everything. Or, for some people, the root of all evil. In any case, the most important, as well as the most difficult, relationships can usually be experienced within the family. This year's Ciné programme portrays numerous families keeping up appearances and struggling with all that has been left unsaid.

The ambitions of a family and those of an individual are on the crash course in the Italian Loose Cannons (Mine vaganti),  as well as in the Danish A Family (En familie).

As the patriarchs of the two families fall ill and the family businesses are in danger of collapsing, the offspring has to decide what to do with their future. Should they stay and adhere to their parent's wishes, even though their lives seem to be elsewhere?

Similarly, the siblings in Olivier Ducastel and Jacques Martineau's Family Tree (L'Arbre et la forêt) are fighting over what to do with the family forest. The son is the drinking black sheep of the family and wants to cash in, whereas the daughter wants everything to stay as it is. Tensions rise even higher after their father decides to reveal a painful secret about his past.

Secret past lives and old ideologies also come to the fore in Susanne Schneider's The Day Will Come (Es kom mt der Tag), in which a young woman arrives to seek answers from the woman, who gave her up for adoption a long time ago.

Looking up one's biological parent is also the theme of Mijke de Jong's Joy. Joy has not had an easy life after having been given up for adoption, but finding her real mother might not solve any problems.

Thomas Vinterberg's Submarino depicts another broken family. The two brothers in the film have grown apart but have both had it equally hard in life. As they attempt to reconnect, some hope for a better tomorrow arises. But can they help one another after all?
