Michelle Pfeiffer is divinely beautiful in Stephen Frears' adaptation of the Colette novel. Pfeiffer plays a courtesan who, after ending her career, moves out to the countryside with her young lover. The idyll of the lovers, however, is soon put under threat when the man's mother decides to marry her son off for money. The film was shot by the virtuoso cinematographer Darius Khondji.
