Junior Ciné opens its doors in a merry way! The festival's Family Day offers free-of-charge screenings, workshops and events, suitable for children of all ages!


Dance geometrically together with the Papulas or giggle along to Gigglebug's new adventures. Visit the projection room, join a game of geocaching of make your own storyboard, to which musicians of Tapiola Sinfonietta create a soundtrack! Family Day kicks off with short animations for the smallest kids and ends with the animation feature My Life as a Courgette for the older ones.

Draw storyboards for your movie and then work with musicians to create a score for your story! Arlene Tucker holds storyboard workshops for groups and Tapiola Sinfonietta make your storyboard come to life by playing a suitable soundtrack.

Group 1: Storyboard workshop from 10.00 to 11.00 +
soundtrack workshop from 11.00 to 11.20
Group 2: Storyboard workshop from 10.00 to 11.00 +
soundtrack workshop from 11.30 to 11.50
Group 3: Storyboard workshop from 11.00 to 12.00 +

Pre-registering on the spot or via jeroen@espoocine.fi. Please inform to which group you wish to register! The maximum number of participants is 6. The workshop is recommended from 6 years onward. The total length of the workshop is 1h 20m in two parts. Support can be given in English. Parents may be present / participate during the workshops.

Arlene Tucker is a visual artist and educator interested in adding play elements to daily life through her art. Inspired by translation studies, she explores how communication can be transposed and transformed, paving the way for unforeseen dialogue to develop.

Gigglebug Photo booth is a crazy game app. The goal is to imitate silly faces from the Gigglebug characters. The tablet's camera gives you a score on how well you succeed!

Glims & Gloms' playful, interactive dance performance for kids. The Papula's - Circle, Square and Triangle - dance in the most geometric way you've ever seen! Join in!

Before the performance you can check out the short film papulaBOX in Louhisali at 13.15. Both the short film and the dance performance are without dialogue!

projection cabin tours

How are films projected on the silver screen? The visitors of Junior Ciné can have an exclusive guided tour in the cinema's secret projection cabin!

Pre-registering at the info desk in festival centre Olohuone during Family Day. From here, we will also start the tour. Gather 5 min before the tour starts. The maximum number of participants per tour is 10.

Children's projection cabin tours start at 12.15, 12.30, 14.15 and 14.30.
Adults' projection cabin tours start at 17.15 and 17.30.
All tours are suitable for English speakers, just inform the guide!

Get your map from festival centre Olohuone to locate the hidden pictures spread around the Cultural Centre.

All groups who locate the pictures are entitled to a small prize! A fun activity for the whole family. Recommended under 11 years.

In this stop motion animation workshop you can bring your own cuddle toy - or the library's toys - to life with pictures! You can join the workshop at any time.

Recommended age: 5-9. We wish that the little ones bring an adult.

FINLAND'S FIRST VR CINEMA

FROM 11.00 TO 15.30, SCREENINGS STARTING ON THE HOUR, ESPOO CULTURAL CENTRE, TOP FLOOR

Finland's first virtual reality cinema opens its doors in Espoo Ciné. The VR Cinema exhibits visually stunning 360 degree movies, viewed through a Samsung Gear VR Head device. There are three screenings available: Journeys, Scifi and Documentaries. Each screening lasts a half an hour and consists of several short stories. The stories are English spoken, with no Finnish versions available. Unfortunately the content is not suitable for children under seven years. Unlike the other activities on Family Day, this is a paying screening. Price: €8,50.
